Cooktown has much to celebrate with you in 2020. Following the grounding here of his ship “The Endeavour”, 250 years ago, Captain Cook and his rich botanic discoveries, convinced him to claim the lands for King George. This laid the foundation of modern Australian history. Experience the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival, the largest cultural gathering of indigenous communities in Northern Australia. The tour also includes snorkelling and scuba diving on the most spectacular corals of the Great Barrier Reef. You will be immersed in the Daintree Rainforest, and at 180 million years old, it is the earth’s oldest rainforest. Both the Reef and the Rainforest are World Heritage listed and the only place on earth where such renowned examples are entwined, devoid of development. Be part of one of the great rail journeys in Australia as you roll through the savannah landscape of the Gulf Country viewing gorges, waterfalls, Aboriginal rock art, lava tubes and the wildlife !

Did you know?

After landing in Australia during his first voyage, Cook pointed his ship north and headed for the Dutch seaport of Batavia. Because he was in unmapped territory, he had no idea he was sailing directly into the razor-sharp coral formations of the Great Barrier Reef. On June 11, 1770, his ship Endeavour slammed into a coral reef and began taking on water, endangering both his crew and his priceless charts of his Pacific discoveries. Cook’s men frantically pumped water out of the holds and threw cannons and other equipment overboard to lighten the ship’s weight. They even used an old sail to try and plug a hole in their hull. After more than 20 desperate hours, they finally stopped the leak and limped toward the Australian coast. It would take Cook nearly two months of repairs to make his ship seaworthy again.
