Birdwatchers will be mesmorised by the beauty of Papua New Guinea’s approximately 760 discovered species of birds, plus many distinctive subspecies. It is home to 31 of the 41 species of Birds of Paradise, the renowned naturalist David Attenborough’s favourite bird. Twelve species are only found in Papua New Guinea.

The rugged Highlands are particularly famous for the endemic species such as the Raggiana and Blue

Birds of Paradise and rare finds including the Fire-maned Bowerbird.

There are numerous other species including Cassowaries which stand up to 1.8 metres high and can weigh up to 59 kg. and Crowned Pigeons, the size of a turkey. The many Satinbird species thrive in the large tracts of rainforest including the Hooded Pitohui, the world’s first known poisonous bird. This is the land of Pesquet’s Parrot, Paradise Kingfishers, mound building Megapodes, amazing Bowerbirds, Hornbills,Honeyeaters, tiny Pygmy Parrots and Lories galore.

Before traversing the country in pursuit of your favoured targets Flynn’s Tours will have you jump straight into some birding in the Varirata National Park forests and other key birdwatching sites around the National Capital that are home to some interesting waterbird species.

Birdwatching in New Britain island will introduce the birder to over 50 endemic bird species including the  New Britain Friarbird, Blueyed Cockatoo, Many types of Pigeons, Doves, Myzomelas, Shining Flycatchers, Lorikeets, Parrots and Kingfishers. All photographed against a great jungle clad volcanic landscape or amongst the more accessible oil palm plantations to which they have adapted.

Kimbe Bay, one of the world’s most ecological diverse marine environments offers a great range of marine based pelagic birds along the coastline and on the nearby islands including the extremely rare Beck’s Petrel.
